Around 8% of the Earth's crust consists of aluminum compounds in various forms. Aluminum is therefore one of the few raw materials that are available in almost unlimited quantities. It possesses properties that make it essential for today's world: it is extremely stable yet lightweight, corrosion-resistant, highly malleable, non-toxic, capable of being combined with other materials, and almost infinitely recyclable. Aluminum can be used over and over again in endless recycling cycles without loss of quality. The energy required for recycling is now only 5% of the initial energy consumption. The share of remelted aluminum accounts for 35% of annual consumption worldwide, and the trend is rising.
